Track and Field: Irish girls take first, boys second at SSC championships
The Rosemount Irish boys' and girls' track teams both put together spectacular performances at the South Suburban championships last week in Prior Lake. The girls' won the conference with 234 points, more than 60 points ahead of second-place Eagan. The boys' were second with 224 points, just behind Prior Lake who won it with 251. Combining both teams, the Irish won 11 out of 36 total events.
Those winners were: senior Shae Buchman in the 100 meter hurdles with a time of 14.69 seconds, the 4x100 relay team (junior Sofia Paniccia, junior Arianna Passeri, senior Alex Wolf and Buchman) in 49.04, junior Lauren Preiner in the high jump with a leap of 5 feet, four inches, junior Alexys Berger in the pole vault with a 11 foot vault (taking first via a jump off) and junior Tierra Doss in the shot put with a throw of 39-01.
Junior Luke Labatte won the 1,600 with a time of 4:25.67 and the 3,200 in 9:34.54, sophomore Jonathan Mann took the 110 hurdles with a time of 14.96 and the 300 hurdles in 39.98, the 4x800 relay team of juniors Danny Cox, Owen Benson and Getinat Asfaw, along with freshman Matthew Weber won in 8:15.32 and junior Max Otterdahl won the discus with a throw of 179-02.
Other top three finishers were Buchman (13.05) taking third in the 100, eighth-grader Jenna Johnson placed second in the 400 with a time of 57.97, about half a second out of first, senior Sydney Hansen took third in the 800 (2:24.69) and eighth-grader Ava Cinnamo was third in the 300 hurdles (45.82). The 4x200 relay team of Paniccia, Cinnamo, and juniors Sydney Essler and Olivia Furnstahl finished third in 1:47.23 while the 4x400 team of Jenna Johnson, Cinnamo, junior Amber Johnson and junior Caitlyn Storley took second with a time of 4:07.21. Berger placed third in the high jump (5-02) and Buchman was second in the long jump with a leap of 16-11.75. Wolf was the runner-up in the triple jump with a 36-8.50 and Doss was second in the discus (116-02), just two inches behind the winner.
Freshman Brian Boakye-Ansah was second in the 400 with a time of 50.50 and senior Preston Strop finished behind Mann in second in the 300 hurdles (40.04). The 4x200 relay team of Boakye-Ansah, Strop, sophomore Mason McDonald and junior Garrison Green finished second with a time of 1:32.15, Mann was the runner-up in the long jump with a leap of 21-06.75 and McDonald took third in the triple jump (42-7.50). Otterdahl placed second in the shot put with a throw of 55-9.50.
